Mark,

Great post.

I think it's the height of arrogance -- hubris in the Greek sense, pride in the Biblical sense -- to think we can be in control. And it drives us crazy. It's scary to realize how little control we actually have in this world and yet how much we have to take responsibility for. And it's even scarier to love people, knowing we can't ultimately protect them from the consequences of their own actions/choices or from totally random events (drunk drivers, for example). We can't control them; we can only love them. We can't control the world (the stock market, our political leaders, the environment); we can only engage them and act as responsibly as possible. I don't know if that's what you mean by interactivity, but it's what I try to do.

Thanks for raising the questions. And, as a former surfer dude, thanks for the analogy.

What we gain from wisdom and experience is the ability to identify opportunities. The extent of our interaction with those opportunities (waves) will determine the extent of our success.

Thanks, Mark.

I am in real estate sales, and I can't remember the last time I felt "in control".

This post was the best I've read in the last year, because the surfer analogy nails it! I've wasted too much time trying to predict the next wave, and the next, when I should be on the board figuring out the best way to ride the wave that's here, now.

Thanks, Mark, I'm out of here to practice "hangin' ten!
