One of the things that I appreciate most about my parents is that they taught me the importance of giving thanks.  There are few gestures in life that are more important than being able to say thank you to those who support, love, educate and encourage you in your journey.  A life of giving thanks isn’t a business formula of obligatory thanks to customers and employees. Those who take a formulaic approach are missing the point.  A leader must live a life of gratitude that is ingrained deep within who they are and what they do on a daily basis.

Today is a perfect time to reflect upon thankfulness and appreciation.  Particularly on this day, I encourage you to specifically give thanks for the men and women who have fought for our freedoms and who have made this holiday possible.  Veterans and currently active service members and their families represent what is truly best about America–a desire to use our talents and skills to serve the greater good without asking much in return.

Now it is our duty to be there for our troops just as they have always been there for us.  Make sure to enjoy your hot dogs and firework shows, but do not forget what this day is all about: celebrating America and thanking those who have given their all to make our country what it is today.

Next time you see a member of our armed forces, stop, shake his or her hand and say thank you.  It might seem like a small gesture, but it is a statement that they deserve and certainly do not hear enough.

Happy Independence Day and Go America!

“America’s fighting men and women sacrifice much to ensure that our great nation stays free. We owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers that have paid the ultimate price for this cause, as well as for those who are blessed enough to return from the battlefield unscathed.” ~ Allen Boyd
